Message From the Principal

Principal Rolanda Golden

Mrs. Golden has been serving as principal of Harkers Island Elementary School since March 2016. She will fill the vacancy left at Down East Middle School/Smyrna Elementary School when Richard Paylor was named Carteret County Public School System’s Assistant Superintendent of Strategic Improvement.

Mrs. Golden has previously worked as the reading specialist at Smyrna Elementary School and Down East Middle School, and she handled numerous administrative duties at the schools.

Mrs. Golden joined the staff of Smyrna Elementary School 28 years ago. She spent the first 17 years teaching in grades kindergarten through fifth grade, and then she served in the capacity of reading specialist.

Mrs. Golden has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. She holds a master’s degree in early childhood education and a master’s degree in school administration from East Carolina University. Mrs. Golden obtained National Board Certification and renewal certification in the area of Early Childhood Generalists, and she is a certified Hill Center instruction specialist.

“I am very pleased to be returning to Down East Middle School/Smyrna Elementary School, and I look forward to working with the teachers and staff to continue to offer the students a quality education,” Mrs. Golden said. “These two schools have outstanding students and parents and a very supportive community. At the same time, I will miss the Harkers Island Elementary School students, staff and parents. Of course, as the students there leave elementary school, I will see them as middle schoolers so that connection will remain.”

Mrs. Golden is a native of Gloucester, a graduate of East Carteret High School and a resident of Bettie.
